About this postcard
The tenth tee of the Rock Island Arsenal golf grounds, where a circular pond nicknamed the "Punch Bowl" curves across the foreground, ringed by mature shade trees with a small red-roofed shelter visible among them. Rock Island Arsenal occupies an island in the Mississippi River between Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa, and was established in 1862 as a U.S. Army ordnance manufacturing post; the surrounding grounds were landscaped and a golf course laid out for officers and employees in the early 20th century. The halftone view captures the park-like, wooded character of the reservation rather than its industrial shops.
