Texas Longhorn steer 'Double Horn', 'The Last of the Texas Long Horn'

Card type

About this postcard

A Texas Longhorn steer stands on a dirt path facing the camera, its long horns sweeping outward and up on either side of its head. The caption printed in white on the image reads "THE LAST OF THE TEXAS LONG HORN (DOUBLE HORN)," the parenthetical apparently the animal's name. By the time this card was made, the open-range herds that fed the great cattle drives were gone, replaced by fenced pastures and improved beef breeds, and the longhorn survived largely as a curiosity and a reminder of the trail-driving West. Real-photo cards of a single celebrated steer traded on that nostalgia for a vanishing type.
