About this postcard

Colorized view of the Alamo facade in San Antonio, Texas, with a Texas flag flying above the curved gable and star emblem. Trees flank the stone building, and the sky fades from blue to pink near the horizon. The printed caption dates the structure to 1718 and names it as the place where David Crockett, Bowie, Travis, and 176 other Texans died fighting Santa Anna's Mexican army. The Alamo began as a Spanish mission and later became a fortress; by the 1920s it was San Antonio's best-known landmark and a shrine to Texas independence. The caption's slogan, "THE WINTER PLAYGROUND OF AMERICA," reflects the city's winter tourist trade.
