The stone facade of the Alamo mission chapel in San Antonio, Texas, fills the view, with its curved parapet and carved entrance. A Texas flag flies on a pole at left, palm trees and a low arcaded wall stand at right, and beds of red flowers edge the lawn in front. The chapel is the best-known surviving structure of the old Spanish mission San Antonio de Valero and the site associated with the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. By the late 1940s it was a well-established civic shrine and tourist stop in downtown San Antonio.
