The Alamo, San Antonio, Texas, circa 1907

About this postcard

The card shows the weathered stone façade of the Alamo mission church in San Antonio, Texas, with its curved gable, arched doorway flanked by columns and niches, and small barred windows; a horse-drawn carriage waits at left and pedestrians in period dress stand along the street. The Alamo was founded in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, and the present chapel façade dates from the mid-18th century. It is best known as the fortress where Texian defenders died in the 1836 siege during the Texas Revolution, and by the time this card was printed it was already a celebrated historic shrine.
