About this postcard
Two three-masted frigates fight at close range on a heavy sea, American ensigns flying, the nearer ship firing a broadside into her opponent amid clouds of powder smoke. The scene depicts the American frigate Constitution, nicknamed Old Ironsides, defeating the English ship La Guerriere on 19 August 1812. The battle was one of the first significant American naval victories of the War of 1812. Constitution, commanded by Isaac Hull, battered the Guerriere until she struck her colors, and the victory helped fix the frigate's nickname in public memory.
