About this postcard
A color lithograph of two three-masted frigates locked in close action on a heavy sea, the nearer ship firing a broadside into her opponent amid clouds of powder smoke, with American ensigns flying. The caption identifies the scene as the USS Constitution's defeat of HMS Guerrière on 19 August 1812, one of the first significant American naval victories of the War of 1812; the action, fought under Captain Isaac Hull, is traditionally linked to the frigate's nickname "Old Ironsides."
