About this postcard
The picture reproduces Jean-François Millet's painting "The Angelus," showing a peasant man and woman standing in a freshly worked field at dusk, heads bowed in prayer as the evening Angelus bell rings; a pitchfork stands upright at the left and a wheelbarrow loaded with sacks rests behind the woman. Millet painted the scene at Barbizon, France, in the late 1850s, and it became one of the most widely reproduced images of the nineteenth century, frequently reissued on postcards. No caption or publisher line is printed on the front.
