The Captain's Well, Main Street, Amesbury, Massachusetts, circa 1910

Card type

About this postcard

A small wooden well house with a shingled gable roof stands behind a white picket fence on Main Street in Amesbury, Massachusetts, shaded by a large, bare-branched tree; rooftops and trees show faintly in the distance. The card names the structure as "The Captain's Well," a local landmark photographed for a bookseller's view series. Amesbury, an old Essex County mill and carriage-making town on the Merrimack River, was also long associated with the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, whose home there made the town a destination for literary pilgrims.
