About this postcard

A paved road curves past The Chessmen, a cluster of tall, blocky granite spires in Custer State Park. Pines and deciduous trees, some in autumn color, surround the formations in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The road is the Needles Road, later part of the Needles Highway, a route engineered through the park's granite country and completed in the early 1920s. The formations are among the park's best-known roadside landmarks.
