About this postcard

A large neoclassical stone mansion with a balustraded roofline, tall windows, and a columned entrance portico stands across a broad lawn with clipped hedges, shrubs, and a flight of stone steps. An American flag hangs at the entrance, and a marble statue stands at the left of the facade. The Elms was completed in 1901 for Edward J. Berwind, a coal magnate, as one of Newport's Gilded Age summer cottages. Architect Horace Trumbauer modeled it on an 18th-century French chateau. By the early 1900s, Newport was an established summer resort for wealthy industrialists, and the estate's formal grounds were a showpiece of the summer colony.
