About this postcard
A view along Manhattan's west side where the Express Highway runs beside the Hudson River through Riverside Park, with Riverside Drive and its apartment blocks on the right. The caption calls the road the Express Highway; it is the Henry Hudson Parkway, whose riverside route opened in the late 1930s. The George Washington Bridge spans the Hudson in the distance. Riverside Drive was laid out in the 1870s as a landscaped boulevard overlooking the Hudson, and by the early 20th century it was lined with the apartment houses seen here. The scene shows the west side after the parkway reshaped the waterfront for automobile traffic.
