A cluster of tall, vertically grooved granite spires called The Five Fingers rises among evergreen trees, with other granite needles visible in the distance under a blue sky. The formation is part of the Needles area of Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota, a district known for eroded granite pinnacles. Custer State Park was established in 1919, and the Needles Highway opened in the early 1920s, bringing visitors through this rocky landscape.
