About this postcard
A panoramic view across the eroded buttes and terraced walls of the Grand Canyon, with a pale blue sky above and deep shadowed gorges below; the card's own caption names it simply "The Grand Canyon of Arizona." The canyon was carved by the Colorado River through layered sedimentary rock over millions of years, and the surrounding area was designated a national monument in 1908 and a national park in 1919. By the 1930s, when color-printed view cards like this one were mass-produced, the South Rim had become a major tourist destination served by the Santa Fe Railway and its El Tovar hotel.
