The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan, circa 1935

About this postcard

A long white resort hotel with a colonnaded veranda and a rounded corner pavilion stands on a landscaped rise above a curving drive, with American flags flying from its roof and cupola. The Grand Hotel opened in 1887, built by railroad and steamship interests to draw summer visitors to Mackinac Island, and its sweeping front porch became its signature feature. The card's linen-era coloring shows the grounds, hedges and roadway much as guests would have approached the hotel in the 1930s.
