A high vantage looks down the Niagara Gorge, where the river churns into the Great Whirlpool, framed by steep, darkly wooded cliffs and a pale sky. The Niagara River links Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, drops over the falls, and races through the gorge before turning into this broad basin. Its currents are too rapid and forceful for any boat to navigate, and the depth of the rock-cut basin was long uncertain. Below the whirlpool, the river settles into a quieter course through the Lower Gorge.
Thin white border; faint scuff/erasure marks in the sky area; visible halftone screen texture.
Postmark: NIAGARA FALLS N.Y. JUL 19 11-PM 1916. Divided back with printed title and descriptive paragraph on back; white border, color-printed stock; light edge wear and toning.
