The Gulf Coast large-letter greetings card, circa 1945

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A large-letter greetings card spells out "GULF COAST" in block letters filled with small scenes of the coast: sailboats and a beach, bathers in the surf, pelicans, palm and tropical foliage, and a leaping game fish. The letters sit on a red panel framed by blue water crowded with sailing craft, while four-engine airliners fly overhead. Such linen-finish large-letter cards were a staple of American roadside and resort souvenir stands from the 1930s into the 1950s, and the aircraft suggest a postwar date.
