About this postcard
A tinted view of The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's plantation house near Nashville, shows a two-story white brick mansion with tall portico columns, a second-floor gallery, and flanking wings, framed by large trees. A group of men, women, and children gathers on the front steps. Jackson bought the property in 1804 and built the brick house in 1819-1821; it remained the family home until his death there in 1845. The estate was a cotton plantation worked by enslaved people. By the early 1900s the house was preserved as a historic site and museum, and the visitors on the steps suggest a sightseeing outing.
