The New York Hippodrome fills the view, its large red and white facade topped with ornate towers and flags and lit by electric signs advertising "A Yankee Circus on Mars" and "The Plunging Horses." Horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles share the street below, and pedestrians move along the sidewalks. The signs date the view to the theater's first years after it opened in 1905 as a vast house built for elaborate spectacles; the card was mailed in 1913. A sender named Martin wrote that he had visited on Friday evening and found it "Certainly great."
