The Homestead, a white clapboard house with shuttered windows, a bay window, and a small entrance porch, stands behind mature shade trees at the end of a curving gravel drive. The Durant family lived here on the shore of Lake Waban, and when Wellesley College opened in 1875 its first classes met in the house while College Hall was being completed. The building remained a college residence and gathering place in the college's early decades.
