About this postcard

A black-and-white view of a large white clapboard house with shuttered windows, a bay window and a small entrance porch, half hidden behind mature shade trees and fronted by a curving gravel drive and lawn. The card names it as The Homestead at Wellesley College. The Homestead was the Durant family residence on the shore of Lake Waban, and when Henry Fowle Durant founded Wellesley College its first classes met in this building in 1875 before the great College Hall was completed; the house long served the college as a residence and gathering place.
