A weathered rock formation rises among the conifers of Crater Lake National Park, its outline reading as a woman's head and shoulders in profile, the likeness behind the name. The park, set aside in 1902 around its deep volcanic lake, drew early visitors who reached the rim by rail and stage from Medford and Klamath Falls, and increasingly by automobile in the years just before and after World War I.
