About this postcard
A tinted view of the Lafayette Hotel, a tall red-brick and light-stone block with a rooftop sign reading "LAFAYETTE HOTEL" and an American flag above it, seen across a wide street busy with pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages, and wagons. The hotel opened in 1904 to designs by Louise Blanchard Bethune, widely regarded as the first professional woman architect in the United States, and it remains a downtown Buffalo landmark. The surrounding commercial blocks and the mix of foot and horse traffic fit the early 1900s, when Buffalo was a major Great Lakes port and rail center.
