About this postcard
An elevated view looks down on "The Loop," the spiral road that carries the Newfound Gap Highway (U.S. 441) through dense forest in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with a stone-faced culvert visible where the road passes beneath itself. The loop was built in the 1930s as part of the New Deal-era road program that opened the crest of the Smokies to motor traffic between Tennessee and North Carolina. The card's linen texture and Curt Teich production number date it to the mid-20th century.
