About this postcard
A three-story red-brick institutional building with white trim, a pedimented central portico carried on tall white columns, and flanking gabled wings, set behind a broad green lawn and shaded by mature trees. The card names it as the Lutheran Children's Home of the South in Salem, Virginia, an orphanage and child-care institution operated by Lutheran congregations of the region. Such homes were common in the early 20th century, housing and schooling dependent children in a single large, dormitory-style building.
