About this postcard

The bronze Minute Man stands on a tall stone pedestal at Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts, with bare trees and shrubs around it under a pale sky. Daniel Chester French's figure commemorates the colonial militia who faced British troops at the bridge on April 19, 1775, and it became a widely recognized image of the ordinary soldier at the start of the Revolution. The pedestal carries lines from Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Concord Hymn," including the phrase "the shot heard round the world." The monument was dedicated in 1875, a century after the fight, and the bridge site remains a landmark of the opening day of the Revolutionary War.
