About this postcard
The picture shows the Moorland, a large shingled summer hotel with a broad veranda, standing on the rocky shore at Bass Rocks in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with surf breaking over the granite ledges in the foreground and smaller buildings along the shoreline beyond. Bass Rocks is a rocky stretch of Cape Ann's Atlantic coast that became a fashionable summer resort area in the late nineteenth century, and the Moorland was among its grand seasonal hotels. The card presents the scene in the tinted, hand-colored style typical of early twentieth-century view postcards.
