About this postcard

The view looks down the Narrows, the tight passage where the Big Thompson River runs between steep rock walls in Big Thompson Canyon. The paved highway follows the right bank, curving with the stream, and scattered conifers stand on the upper slopes. The route is U.S. 34, which climbs from Loveland through the canyon to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. By the mid-twentieth century, this canyon drive was a familiar scenic approach to the park, with the river and highway sharing the narrow gorge.
