About this postcard

A quiet stretch of the Wisconsin River winds between towering, horizontally banded sandstone bluffs, with dense pine and hardwood forest crowning the cliffs and a single bird in the sky. The card names the spot "The Navy Yard," one of the named rock formations in the Wisconsin Dells, a gorge cut by the Wisconsin River through Cambrian sandstone. The Dells became a popular Upper Midwest tourist destination in the late 19th century, and the formations were celebrated in stereographs and postcards by photographers such as H. H. Bennett of Kilbourn (now Wisconsin Dells).
