About this postcard
A two-story frame house with a deep veranda and shuttered windows stands among mature shade trees, its lawn sloping toward the viewer. The caption identifies it as the Old Davenport Residence at Rock Island Arsenal, the Army ordnance works on an island in the Mississippi River. The arsenal was established during the Civil War and became a major center for small-arms and artillery manufacture. The house is an older domestic remnant within the military reservation, associated with George Davenport, an early fur trader and settler on Rock Island.
