About this postcard
The card's own caption names the scene as the Old National Bridge at Richmond, Indiana, a long span carrying a roadway across a wooded valley, with scattered houses on the bluff above and a road curving through the foreground. The bridge carried the National Road (Cumberland Road), the federal highway begun in 1811 that connected Cumberland, Maryland, with the Midwest, over the Whitewater River at Richmond. Richmond was a National Road town and later a railroad and manufacturing center in eastern Indiana.
