About this postcard
A view down a sandy St. Augustine street toward the building long promoted as "The Oldest House in the U.S." — a dwelling with whitewashed lower walls, a dark wood upper story and two-tier porch, shaded by a tall palm, with smaller red-roofed houses receding along the street. The structure is traditionally identified as the González–Álvarez House, whose coquina-walled core dates to the early 18th century under Spanish rule, later remodeled in the British and American periods. It has long been preserved as a house museum by the St. Augustine Historical Society and is a standard stop on tours of the city's colonial quarter.
