About this postcard

A small, weathered clapboard building with a shingled roof stands behind a picket fence on St. George Street, its facade draped in blooming wisteria and fronted by flower beds; a painted banner reading "OLDEST SCHOOL HOUSE" hangs beside the gate. The card presents the structure as the oldest schoolhouse in the United States, a landmark in St. Augustine's colonial quarter — the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the country, as the lower caption notes. The building is today preserved as a museum along the city's restored St. George Street pedestrian district.
