About this postcard
A street view of a cluster of clapboarded, shuttered frame houses with red roofs, shaded by large elms, identified by the caption as the original Daniel Webster home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Daniel Webster (1782–1852), the celebrated orator and statesman, was born in Salisbury, New Hampshire, and practiced law in Portsmouth early in his career, so the house was long shown to visitors as a Webster landmark. The tinted view shows the plain Federal-era vernacular housing of a New England seaport town in the early 20th century.
