About this postcard

A dirt road runs through a grove of large live oaks draped with Spanish moss, their branches meeting overhead above grass on either side. The grove, also known as the "Cathedral of Oaks," stands on the Mississippi just below New Orleans at Chalmette. Tradition dates the planting to 1783 and counts 79 live oaks. The site is the Plains of Chalmette battlefield, where Andrew Jackson defeated British forces under General Edward Pakenham in January 1815.
