A shaded woodland path ends at a spring, where a rustic rail fence, the old bars, crosses the way and a water trough catches a stream of water. The printed verse treats the fence and trough as witnesses to rural courtship: the bars have stopped 'so many a youthful loving pair,' and the trough offers 'sparkling nectar fresh from the spring.' Signed Dillé. Such sentimental scenes were common on early twentieth-century postcards, pairing nostalgic country settings with verses about love and memory.
