About this postcard
The Pergola, the dining room of the Hotel Lenox, laid out with white-linened tables beneath a rustic trellis of grapevines. Clusters of grapes hang from the lattice, and baskets of red and white flowers stand at the edges of the room. The Lenox opened in 1900 at Boylston and Exeter Streets, one of the new hotels built in Back Bay as the neighborhood filled in around Copley Square, and the Pergola became a known setting for luncheons, dinners, and society gatherings. Trellis-and-vine dining rooms were a popular way for hotels of the period to give guests the feel of a garden indoors.
