The Pinnacles in the Bad Lands, South Dakota, circa 1935

Card type

About this postcard

Colored view of the eroded spires and banded buttes known as The Pinnacles rising from the South Dakota Bad Lands, with the dry plains stretching to the horizon. The Bad Lands are composed of soft sedimentary rock layers — volcanic ash, sandstone, and clay — carved by water and wind into sharp ridges and pinnacles; the region lies between the White and Cheyenne Rivers and was set aside as Badlands National Monument in 1939, later a national park. The card's bright, hand-colored palette is typical of the linen-era views of the 1930s and 1940s.
