The Pinnacles on Needles Highway, Custer State Park, SD, 1932

About this postcard

The view shows a paved road curving between the tall, needle-like granite spires of the Pinnacles in Custer State Park. Dark conifers cover the surrounding slopes, with layered hills fading beyond. The Needles Highway, completed in 1922, formed part of the Black Hills road system associated with Governor Peter Norbeck, and its narrow tunnels and tight curves kept travelers close to the granite formations. The scene lies in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
