A man in eighteenth-century dress, dark coat, white cravat, and wide-brimmed black hat, skates on a frozen lake with his arms folded. Bare trees, other skaters, and a distant town skyline fill the background. The painting is Gilbert Stuart's The Skater, his 1782 portrait of William Grant, a Scottish lawyer who later became a judge. Stuart painted it in London, where the full-length figure on ice helped establish his reputation before he returned to America and became a leading portraitist.
White border around the image; color reproduction of a painting, no printed text on front; light edge and corner wear.
No postmark; unused divided-back card. Printed National Gallery of Art reproduction card, mid-20th century. Pencil dealer marks "#59" and "1-" at lower right. Slight foxing/toning and a few stains on the back; front has a white border.
