The view looks through the vaulted south porch of Cirencester's parish church, St John the Baptist, toward the pews and columns of the interior. The porch's fan tracery and carved stonework belong to the Perpendicular Gothic work that wealthy Cotswold wool merchants supported in the late Middle Ages. Cirencester grew rich on the wool trade, and its church was enlarged on a scale that reflected the town's prosperity.
