The picture shows the rough stone stairway climbing the rocky slope to Hermit's Rest, a rustic stone-and-log building with a red tile roof nestled among trees at the Grand Canyon. The printed caption identifies the Grand Canyon National Park and the stairs. Hermit's Rest was designed by architect Mary Colter and built in 1914 as a rest stop at the end of the South Rim's West Rim Drive, its rugged masonry intended to blend with the canyon landscape.
