The photograph shows the rough stone stairway climbing a rocky slope to Hermit's Rest, a rustic stone-and-log building with a red tile roof set among trees on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The structure overlooks the canyon and the gorge of the Colorado River. Mary Colter designed Hermit's Rest for the Fred Harvey Company, and it was built in 1914 as a rest stop at the end of the West Rim Drive. Its heavy masonry and low profile were meant to sit naturally in the canyon landscape.
