Slender stalagmites rise from the floor of the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns, their stacked, tapering forms resembling totem poles. Small figures at the lower right give a sense of the chamber's scale. The cave stays at 56 degrees year-round, a detail that impressed early visitors. Carlsbad Caverns became a national park in 1930, and its vast limestone chambers were already a well-known southwestern tourist destination.
