About this postcard

A color view of Union Station in Portland, Oregon: a long red-brick Renaissance Revival terminal with green roofs, a tall clock tower topped by a flagpole flying the American flag, and a columned loggia along the ground floor. Automobiles are parked on the broad plaza in front. The station opened in 1896 and was designed by Henry Van Brunt, with a clock tower modeled on Italian campanile forms. By the mid-1940s it was Portland's main intercity rail terminal, and the cars on the plaza reflect the mix of rail and automobile travel of the period.
