About this postcard
A view north along Third Street from its corner with Felix Street in St. Joseph, Missouri, with commercial blocks lining both sides, striped awnings over the sidewalks, a Western Union telegraph office on the right, and a shop advertising trunks, traveling bags and suit cases on the left. Pedestrians cross the wide dirt-paved street while a horse-drawn wagon stands at the right curb and telegraph poles and wires cross the sky. St. Joseph, on the Missouri River, was in this era a major railroad and wholesale center, supplying the towns of the surrounding region, and it was the starting point of the 1860 Pony Express. The storefronts along Third Street, with their awnings out against the sun, show the everyday commercial traffic of a busy river and rail city.
