About this postcard
Thomas Motor Lodge is a long, single-story motor court with red roofs, yellow and red brick walls, and carports sheltering period automobiles beside a wide concrete drive. The printed caption identifies it as a family-run stop three miles north of Lynchburg on U.S. 29, with a Madison Heights post office box, owned and operated by the Thomas family; AAA emblems on both sides mark it as an approved accommodation for auto tourists. Motor courts like this one multiplied along American highways in the 1940s and 1950s, offering parking at the door as a roadside alternative to downtown hotels. U.S. 29 was a main north-south route through central Virginia, and the lodge's location just outside Lynchburg placed it on the northern approach to the city.
