Three angels with lantern in snow, Heidelberg, Germany, 1962

Card type

About this postcard

Three winged children with golden hair walk through a snowy landscape at night, one holding a red candle and another a small lantern or gift, while a bird flies alongside them. The figures are posed mid-stride against the dark sky, a sentimental Christmas image of the kind popular on mid-century German greeting cards. The card carries a printed wish for a merry Christmas and a good new year, and a short handwritten line from the sender in Heidelberg. Printed in West Germany and mailed in December 1962, it reached Detroit on Christmas Eve, arriving in time for the holiday it pictures.
