Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, Oregon Coast Highway, Oregon, circa 1938

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

The picture shows the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, a white tower and keeper's quarters perched atop a dark basalt sea stack, with heavy surf breaking against the rock and the open Pacific beyond. The card labels it as a feature of the Oregon Coast Highway. Tillamook Rock Light was first lit in January 1881 after a notoriously difficult construction on the offshore rock, and its exposed situation earned it the nickname "Terrible Tilly"; the station was decommissioned in 1957.
