About this postcard
A night view looking south down Broadway through Times Square, with the illuminated signs of the Hotel Astor, the Claridge, the Roxy and the Capitol theatre glowing among darkened office buildings; the caption names it simply "Times Square at Night, New York City." By the late 1930s the square's Great White Way was at its neon peak, and the Hotel Astor (demolished in 1967) and the Roxy (closed 1960) were among its best-known landmarks. The scene shows the era's mix of trolley-less asphalt, taxis, buses and dense pedestrian crowds beneath stacked billboards.
